The
Program
The
Davis Dyslexia Correction®
Program, which teaches individuals to control their dyslexia,
is a program consisting of a week of one-on-one tutoring. It is
an intensive 25-30 hour week, which includes a support training
session for parents or others who will assist in at-home support
and continued work with the client. This takes place in Bellingham,
Washington, under the direction of Ruth Ann Youngberg, the facilitator.
This program differs from other approaches to correcting dyslexia
because it deals with root of the problem and not just the symptoms
caused by it. The program uses the person's own mental talents
and abilities to overcome the problems. It does not use phonics,
repetition, memorization, large print, or any physical devices
to correct the dyslexia.
The program consists of an assessment to determine the areas where
correction is needed or desired, orientation counseling to give
the client tools to control their perceptions and distortions
in vision, hearing, motor skills, etc., and symbol mastery exercises
to clear up the confusions caused by their distorted perceptions.
The symbol mastery process uses clay to create pictures and meanings
for abstract words and symbols that have been causing problems.
Professional
services described as Davis®, Davis Dyslexia Correction®,
including Davis Symbol Mastery®, Davis Orientation Counseling®,
and Davis Learning Strategies® services may only be provided
by persons who are trained and licensed through Davis
Dyslexia Association International.
